US Safe from Lost/Stolen Passports?

Over the weekend, my passport as well as my wifes passport was stolen. Because of the weekend holiday, we weren't able to report a lost passport to the US Government for 4+ days. That is 4 days of a US Passport which could be used to gain entrance to the US. Even the 24 Hour Hotline was closed. Why wouldn’t the United States open a 24 Hour Hotline to take information to cancel passports or at least flag them if there are problems? I can get 24/7 service from most companies but not from Homeland Security?
